I think what you are suggesting is that artists give their music away in support of their tours. I think there is merit to this approach but it is by no means the complete answer to the music industry’s problems. The one thing we can say for sure is that the monolith of CD sales is gone and there will be multiple revenue streams in the industry.

That’s a good synopsis of my thesis; thanks Marc
But I’m not convinced that ad-supported music can make it. I mean who would legitimately prefer ads between songs over *completely* free? And there are definitely many different models (such as the latest, lala) which purport to approximate “freeness” but none will get close enough, nor can they gain the traction they need.
Fred Wilson has been beating this hobby horse for a long time, to little avail.
There is no turning back after the floodgates have been open for so long.
